Book World News

Paper beats pixels. According to research by Statista, print books remain the preference of most readers. The statistics look at what percentage of the population have purchased print books and e-books. The biggest gap came in Germany, where 58% of the population had purchased a print book compared to only 10.4% who had purchased an e-book. E-books have the greatest saturation in China, with 24.4% of the population purchasing an e-book.

Summer Reading 2021

Summer Reading 2021

Are you ready to have some fun? We are! Our Summer Reading Program this year has a theme: “Tails & Tales.” We have our presenters ready to go, and we’re just about to kick-off! As in past years, we will be holding the events at the Boys & Girls Club.
“Lew-E’s Comedy Circus” will start the fun Wednesday, June 9th at 1 pm. Lew-E specializes in making reading fun and hilarious!
“Animal Tales.”  Thursday, June 17th at 1 pm. Animal Tales Southeast brings a safe, educational, and close-up animal experience!
“Yasu Ishida” Wednesday, June 23rd at 1 pm. Unique storytelling featuring origami, magic, and even traditional Japanese Theatre to catch your child’s mind!
“Professor Whizzpop”  Thursday, July 1st at 1 pm. Encouraging reading with a comical show full of magic animals!
“The Gutsy Fox”  Wednesday, July 14th at 1 pmAn energetic and entertaining Fox will help your child’s reading soar!
After the last show, there will be a Celebration Party and we’ll serve pizza and refreshments.
We cannot forget the most important part: reading.  Your children need to read over summer break so they don’t fall behind in school. As always, there are three age groups: 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16. The registration forms and reading logs are available at the Library to pick up. The reading program starts on Monday, May 31st, and ends on Friday, July 16th. Each child who reads can log the books on the reading log. We will be awarding a $25 Gift Card for Barnes & Noble for the top reader in each age group. Everyone who participates will receive a “Goody bag.”
We look forward to seeing everyone and having a successful program this summer.

“Without Teachers, Life Would Have No Class”

Summer Reading Program 2021

Attention all Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles:
Life is busy, but we’re here to help. Evidence shows that children who do not read during the summer fall behind in the classroom the next school year. Did you know that Abbeville Memorial Library holds a Summer Reading Program for children ages 5-16?
Each year has a different theme, and this year it is “Tails and Tales.” During June/July, we will have books to read, weekly presentations by entertainers, and programs for children in groups aged 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16.
Bring the children to the library, check out books, and help them keep up with their “Reading Log.” Their Reading Log records all the books they read and is turned in at the end of the program. After turning in, we go through the log and check to make sure that the books are age-appropriate for the child. Each book is awarded points, and the child with the most points in each age group will be considered the top reader. We will be awarding a $25 Gift Card for Barnes and Noble for the top reader in each age group, and everyone who participates will receive a “Goody Bag.”
In May, registration forms become available at the library. These forms are also a consent form to permit your children to attend the weekly presentations that we hold in the Boys & Girls Club auditorium. We hope to see lots of children there and look forward to helping you make sure your child succeeds!
